What Is Umrah?

Umrah is an Islamic pilgrimage to Makkah. It can be performed at any time of the year. It includes important rituals like Ihram, Tawaf, Sa'i, and Halq or Taqsir.

Step-by-Step Guide to Perform Umrah

8 simple steps, each with a picture and its du'as in Arabic, transliteration and English

Step 1 of 8

Get into Ihram

๐Ÿ“ At home, at the airport or on the plane, before the Miqat

  • Have a bath (ghusl), trim your nails and tidy your hair.
  • Men: put on the two white Ihram sheets and sandals that leave the top of the foot open. Perfume on the body only, before the intention.
  • Women: wear your normal modest clothes, in any colour.
  • Flying from the UK or US straight to Jeddah? Put the Ihram on before you board or on the plane. The crew announce when the plane nears the Miqat.

Women: Women do not cover the face with a niqab or wear gloves while in Ihram.

๐Ÿ’ก Keep the Ihram in your hand luggage, not in the hold.

Good to Know

For women, children, elderly pilgrims, and the Miqat on your flight

Miqat on flights from the USA

Flights to Jeddah pass the Miqat before landing, so be in Ihram before the crew's announcement (about 30 minutes before). Going to Madinah first? Then you enter Ihram at Dhul Hulaifah (Abyar Ali) on the way from Madinah to Makkah.

Women

Wear any modest clothes; no niqab or gloves in Ihram. Walk at a normal pace in Tawaf and Sa'i. If your period starts, stay in Ihram and do Tawaf after it ends; tell our team and we help change your plans.

Children

A child's Umrah is valid; parents make the intention for small children and carry them in Tawaf. Put a wristband with your phone number on young children and agree a meeting point.

Elderly or less mobile pilgrims

Wheelchairs and electric carts can be hired at the Haram, and Tawaf on the first floor or roof is calmer. Choose a hotel close by and not on a hill: each package page shows the walk and any slope.

Detailed Umrah Rituals

Learn more about each step of Umrah

1. Introduction to Umrah

Umrah is a sacred pilgrimage to Makkah that Muslims perform at any time of the year. Unlike Hajj, it is not obligatory but holds immense spiritual significance. It involves a set of rituals that cleanse the soul and bring believers closer to Allah. Preparing well ensures a smooth and fulfilling journey.

2. Importance of Umrah

Umrah is a way to seek forgiveness, spiritual purification, and countless blessings. The Prophet (PBUH) said; that performing Umrah erases sins and brings divine rewards. For many, it is a life-changing experience, strengthening their faith and devotion to Allah. Repeating Umrah often is highly encouraged for those who can afford it.

3. Preparation of Umrah

Proper preparation ensures a comfortable and stress-free pilgrimage. Arrange travel documents, Umrah packages, and accommodations in advance. Pack essentials like Ihram clothing, personal hygiene items, and health supplies. Learn about the Umrah rituals and supplications to stay focused. Spiritual preparation, including repentance and making sincere duas, is equally important.

4. The Ihram

Ihram is the sacred state a pilgrim enters before starting Umrah. Men wear two white, seamless sheets, while women dress modestly in loose clothing. Perfume, cutting nails, and grooming should be done before Ihram. Once worn, certain restrictions apply, including avoiding arguments, hunting, and using scented products.

5. Intention for Umrah and Talbiyah

Before crossing Meeqat, pilgrims make the intention (Niyyah) for Umrah with sincerity. They then begin reciting Talbiyah: โ€œLabbayka Allahumma Labbayk...โ€ This powerful supplication expresses submission to Allah. Pilgrims continue reciting it until they reach the Haram, keeping their focus on worship and devotion.

6. The Meeqat

Meeqat is the boundary where pilgrims must enter the state of Ihram. There are five Meeqat points for different regions. If you fly from the UK or the US directly to Jeddah, you pass the Miqat in the air before landing. Enter Ihram on the plane before the Miqat (the crew usually announce it), or before you board. Missing this step requires offering a penalty (dam), so it must be followed carefully.

7. Reaching Haram

Upon reaching Masjid al-Haram, pause to appreciate its spiritual significance. Enter with the right foot, reciting prayers of peace and humility. Seeing the Kaaba for the first time is an emotional momentโ€”use it to make sincere duas. Proceed towards Tawaf, ensuring to follow the flow of pilgrims respectfully.

8. Tawaf

Tawaf involves circling the Kaaba seven times, starting from the Black Stone (Hajr-e-Aswad). Each round should be performed with devotion, reciting duas or praising Allah. Men are encouraged to walk briskly in the first three rounds. After completing Tawaf, pray two rakats near Maqam-e-Ibrahim before moving to Zamzam water.

9. Sa'ee

Sa'ee commemorates Hajra's (AS) search for water, walking between Safa and Marwah seven times. Begin at Safa, facing the Kaaba, and move to Marwah while reciting supplications. Men are encouraged to speed up between the green markers. This step reminds pilgrims of patience, struggle, and reliance on Allah's mercy.

10. Shaving the Head and Cutting the Hair

The final step of Umrah is Tahalul, symbolizing renewal and humility. Men either shave their heads completely (preferred) or trim their hair evenly. Women trim a small portion. This marks the exit from Ihram, and all restrictions are lifted. With Umrah complete, pilgrims pray for acceptance and divine blessings.

11. Women, children and visas

Women can perform Umrah without a mahram under Saudi rules (Ministry of Hajj and Umrah); religious views differ, so ask a scholar. Umrah permits are issued from age 5; check Nusuk for younger children before you book. US passport: tourist eVisa. (Checked 9 October 2026.)
